Doncaster Rovers: Dickov raps slack Rovers

Paul Dickov was again frustrated by his side’s performance in the pre-season friendly win at Rossington Main.

The Rovers boss felt his side failed to match expectations, which he accused them of against Retford on Saturday.

“The standards we want to set for the players weren’t really met,” Dickov said.

“It was disappointing on that front.

“The positives were three goals, a clean sheet and no injuries - that’s about it.

“The game got a bit too easy for us and some of the players wanted to take too many touches of the ball rather than make the ball do the work.

“It’s early days but we expect better.”

David Cotterill missed the game after suffering a knock to his knee at Retford while James Coppinger is back in training after his recent illness.

Paul Keegan is still struggling with a thigh strain.

Dickov confirmed he will continue to assess trio of trialists Danny Philliskirk, Sanchez Payne and Luke McCullough.

All three have played in each of Rovers’ three friendlies so far while other trialists have come and gone.

Dickov said: “I think they’ve done well and I think they did a lot better at Rossington.

“Danny is looking a lot sharper and caused a few more problems.

“You can see Sanchez has got the pace and the trick, he just needs to simplify his game a little bit.

“And Luke for a 19-year-old kid at the back he’s got a lot of maturity. He’s calm, probably a bit too calm at times.

“All three have got a lot of potential and we’ll keep having a look at them.”

Dickov confirmed again he was looking at the trio as potential additions to the development squad.

Set to join Rovers newly-created development side are six youth team graduates who penned their first professional deals with the club yesterday.

Strikers Chris Whincop and Alex Peterson, midfielders Harry Middleton and Josh Meade and full backs Evan Finnegan and Jordan Binns have all signed one year deals.

All except Binns played during the second half at Rossington.
