Axholme Raiders 4
Westcliffe Lions 0
AXHOLME Raiders played their final away game of the season at the Westcliffe Lions on Sunday.
The game started with both teams having equal possession of the ball but nothing clear-cut being created. The first Raiders chance came after some good inter play in midfield from Hicken and then Burr who found Tuplin in space to fire on goal.
Raiders season top scorer Hazel was next to go close just lifting it over the advancing Lions keeper but also just clearing the crossbar.
Both teams were struggling to find their passing game on the small pitch but the Raiders made the first breakthrough after a Young throw in found Harvey to head in to make it 1-0.
Whiteley was also in control being quick off his line to gather any over hit passes. With half time approaching the Raiders extended their lead after a goalmouth scramble wasn’t cleared, Hicken and Smith both had shots blocked but Burr found the net to extend the away team’s lead.
The second half carried on where the first had left off with the Raiders having most of the ball.
Watchman and Cuthbert had both come on into the midfield to help breakdown any Lions attempts to gain control of the ball. Chances for the Raiders fell to Smith and Young but it was Hazel who scored with an individual effort beating two players before firing past the oncoming keeper into the net.
The hard working Burdett came on at left back to replace Young.
Whiteley had shown safe hands on a couple of occasions with the Lions reduced to shooting from distance.
The fourth and final goal came after a free kick by Cuthbert was knocked into the box and Coggan beat the keeper to head towards goal, a defender cleared of the line only to see it go in off Harvey for his second of the game.
Raiders man of the match was Kieran Tupling.
