The old, local knowing joke locally may see Rovers referred to as ‘little old Doncaster’ but Paul Dickov certainly does not see his new club in that way when it comes to transfer targets.
Dickov is aiming high in the transfer market and believes Rovers supporters will be excited by the players he is looking to bring in.
“We’re speaking to some top players and the signs are encouraging,” Dickov said.
“I’m excited about the players we’re looking to bring in.”
Chairman John Ryan has confirmed Rovers are exploring the option of bringing Manchester United attacking midfielder Nick Powell in on loan plus plotting a return for former favourite Richie Wellens.
And the club have been linked with an ambitious move for Manchester City striker John Guidetti who netted 20 goals in 23 games on loan at Feyenoord two seasons ago.
Dickov wants to put together a squad that will not only secure Championship survival but also compete towards the right end of the table.
To do that, he is looking to add Championship experience as well as general quality to his ranks.
He said: “The mix we’re looking to get in is going to give us a right good chance next season.
“The majority of players will know the Championship and have been successful in the division before.
“But if I think a player can come in here, make us better and is the right character I’ll try to get him.”
