A billiards squad have been celebrating after sinking the Isle of Axholme League trophy following a powerful end to their competitive season.

Westwoodside suffered a slow start to this year’s campaign, but came into their own with just games to spare as they snatched victory from West Butterwick B in second by just three points.

Throughout the season, the leaders of the league had changed hands with West Butterwick B spending time at the top along with Owston Ferry A - who finished in third - as Westwoodside remained on the sides’ coat-tails.

The side made sure they clinched the title with a final game win over basement club Epworth A, beating them by 14 points to seven.

Club captain Peter Snell and the squad, who train on Mondays and play their matches on Wednesday, were on hand to collect the trophy at a special presentation held at the Duke William pub in Haxey.

Snell, who has been playing billiards for over 40 years, told the Bells: “We were delighted to win the league, it’s been a tough season.

“We had a really slow start but then began to gather momentum and finished really well.

“I think towards the end of the season we really came into our own so we’re very pleased to have won the league against tough opposition.”
