Jamie McDonnell: Destiny is calling me – I’ll win it for Doncaster

Jamie McDonnell will walk out at the Keepmoat at around 9pm on Saturday night, backed by the familiar riff of The Killers’ Mr Brightside.

When the opening bars of the song ring out, the gathered thousands will erupt to welcome Doncaster’s very own history maker to the ring, ready for the fight of his life.

And it is for those people that McDonnell says he is out to win the IBF world bantamweight title.

“There’s so many people who want to see me win a world title in Doncaster and you want to do it for them,” McDonnell said.

“You can feel the people who genuinely want you to win this one.

“It’s been a tremendous buzz, going out and promoting this fight because people are behind me.

“I’ve seen their faces in my mind every day when I’ve been out running. That pulls you through the hard times.

“This is for everyone to enjoy. This is for Doncaster.”

According to the bookies, McDonnell will be the underdog when he meets Mexico’s Julio Ceja on Saturday night.

The 20-year-old has stopped 22 of his 24 opponents so far and is the hot young prospect in the division.

But McDonnell is convinced it will be him causing an early stoppage, not his hard hitting foe.

He said: “I’ve got to get through that first round, see whether he’s got the power that his record suggests and feel it out.

“I’m sure I’ll feel his power at some points but I’m going in there to hit and move and dust him away.

“I do believe I’m going to stop him – I’ve told my dad to stick a bet on. This fight is mine after six rounds, I’ve thought it for a long time and I believe it even more now.

“To be honest I’m not bothered how it comes as long as I get the win.

“I’ll be sat on holiday next week with a nice cold beer, smiling and saying to myself that I’m the world champion.”
