The battle for the Scunthorpe & District League Division Three title took a dramatic new year twist as Epworth Town Reserves fell to a 3-2 defeat to rivals Westwoodside Rangers.
Epworth suffered a setback as their 100 per cent record for the season fell in the first game of the new year to their local rivals.
However, player coach Tom Appleby insisted his team played well and were unlucky to lose and says his team look good to continue their title charge.
“They started better than us and took the lead. It took us a good 15 minutes to settle into the game,” said Appleby.
“After that we played some neat football and were looking dangerous on the break.
“Unfortunately we couldn’t nick an equaliser before the break. We had a feeling it wasn’t to be our day.
“It was only bad luck that was on offer for us. Had it been the other way round we would be looking back at a very comfortable victory.
“All the lads played outstanding and if we can carry on this form for the rest of the season we have nothing to worry about.”
Westwoodside boss Kev Blow credited his side’s character for the victory and said the result could send out a message of intent to other teams in the division.
“If I’m honest they did deserve something out of the game but I think my squad showed great resolve,” said Blow. “When we weren’t playing well but we still managed to get the result and it shows a lot of character.
“It’s one game won, we move on to the next, but teams will be looking at that result knowing we have beaten Epworth in the league and cup and they are at the top of the league.”
