Bucky’s Blog: Tough away trip to Swindon can inspire Rovers

When they came in at half time on Saturday I couldn’t believe we weren’t two or three goals up, because we should have been.

Later in the game I was asking myself, did Gillingham deserve to go 2-0 up? No. We just really need to finish better because we worked the goalkeeper.

Wellens put in a brilliant ball to Coppinger from 25-30 yards away, and unusually for him, he missed with the toe-poke from the penalty spot.

The first half was really solid but then we got caught on the counter, and we shouldn’t be happy.

I’ve heard people saying that we should be looking to go down to Swindon on Saturday and see if we can nick a draw, but I think there’s every chance we’ll go there and win.

As daft as it sounds we do better when we’re up against it. It’s such a strange one, and who knows the answer?

If you take our away form into account you just hope we’ll go down to Swindon and dig in. Our away form is up there with anyone’s.

I would certainly hope for a reaction this weekend, and I certainly hope the manager is saying he expects the same.

If I was in his shoes at half time last Saturday I’d just have said keep doing what they’re doing, because we were creating chances and we were working their keeper.

But we need Tyson to come back into the side firing now, there’s no doubt the lads will be banging them in, in training, but we need to start doing it on the pitch.

Swindon will come at us so we might need to play on the counter, but that should suit us as we play well on the counter.

Peter Taylor said after the game on Saturday that Gillingham had beaten a good side. We’re not a bad side at all, we’re just lacking in a bit of confidence.

But in my mind this season will come down to whether we can put together a run of four or five wins. We’ve still got a game in hand that could see us move towards the top half.

Let’s just keep our fingers crossed for the trip to Swindon at the weekend.
