Doncaster Town are hoping ladies cricket really catches on, writes Paul Goodwin.

Coach Nick Johnson has hailed the club’s first season in the northern section of the Women’s Yorkshire League as “inspirational”.

He hopes to recruit more new players over the winter to build on the team’s encouraging start.

“Since we launched the team it has been inspiring to watch how the girls have developed their cricketing skills and their enthusiasm for the sport has grown,” said Nick.

“Considering we started from scratch they performed very professionally.

“We’ve got a few of our hockey girls in the team - so once they learn how to hold a cricket bat like a hockey stick, we’ll do even better!

“I’d like to thank Yusuf’s for their generous sponsorship and for having the belief in us,” he added. “Hopefully we can repay them next season with a few more wins.”

The ladies team are hoping to arrange net sessions over the winter, with new players welcome to attend.

Anyone interested in taking up the sport is also invited to attend the team’s end of season awards night, to be held on November 15.
