Paul Dickov is ready to play the rotation game.
Although the Scot admits he is stuck between something of a rock and a hard place when it comes to team selection - and his search for consistency.
Dickov stated his team’s up and down form had gone from the “sublime to the ridiculous” after last weekend’s 3-0 defeat at Bristol City.
His players responded with a much more disciplined display against Crawley Town on Tuesday night.
Finding some sort of consistency is right at the top of Dickov’s current agenda.
But he must also balance consistency in selection with a busy workload, which includes next Tuesday night’s trip to Fulham in the Capital One Cup and also a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy second round tie at Burton Albion at the start of next month.
Dickov admits that squad rotation must come into effect, given his limited numbers.
But he says it’s a fine balancing act as Rovers look to inject some much-needed consistency and impetus into their season.
“It’s a difficult one,” admitted Dickov.
“For consistency you need to try and keep a settled team.
“But with the small squad that we’ve got, and especially the amount of games that we’ve got coming up over the next three or four weeks, you’re going to have to rotate.
“That’s because it’s a tough ask for everybody to go out there and play to their maximum when you’re playing Saturday Tuesday Saturday Tuesday, which is what we’ve got coming.
“So it’s a fine line, but we’ll get there.”
Dickov raised a few eyebrows among fans by making no substitutions during the stalemate with Crawley.
And his very apparent lack of attacking options was put to him post-game by reporters.
“It’s plain to see,” said Dickov.
“We’d like more options.
“Hopefully Curtis [Main] isn’t too far away, which will give us another.
“Obviously without Harry [Forrester], that’s two out of five of our main goal threats missing.
“But the pleasing thing is the boys kept going and showed a bit of spirit. That’s the one thing I was looking for.
“I thought they were brave too,” he added.
“There were times we could have lumped it forward but we kept our heads and kept on passing it and being patient.”
