Gary McSheffrey says the Iron faithful will see a difference in him as a player after overcoming an injury-ravaged time during the latter stages of United’s promotion-winning campaign.

The United winger struggled with niggles including a hamstring problem which forced him out of the back end of the season as Scunthorpe secured automatic promotion.

However, the well-travelled midfielder is raring to go in this year’s pre-season and says Scunthorpe have no fear following promotion into the third tier of football.

“Having missed the last month or so of the season, I am already looking forward to returning for pre-season,” said the 31-year-old.

“I had a couple of niggles last season and I had a problem with my hamstring which I’d never had before so I’ll just be hoping that I can get a good pre-season under my belt because that is something I didn’t get last season.”

On Scunthorpe’s ambitions for the 2014-15 campaign, McSheffrey said: “We will be all aiming to have another great season for this club.

“The main thing is that we get off to the best possible start we can when the season starts.

“We can’t afford to be left behind. If you can get a good start then you never know what could happen.”

The former Coventry City ace went on: “Again it is still one of those leagues where anyone can beat anyone.

“When we are on our best form we could probably beat any of the teams that are in that league with us.

“Likewise, that can also work the other way around. We are all looking forward to the challenge and we have nothing to fear.”

The ex-Birmingham City and Chesterfield man added: “All the lads here are full of confidence having achieved so much last season.”
