Doncaster Rovers legend Billy Sharp could net a fortune for the charity set up in memory of his baby son every time he finds the net this season.
The striker, who rejoined the club on loan just over a week ago, will score £50 for every goal he bags between now and May.
The cash has been pledged by the club’s fans’ group the Viking Supporters Co-operative - and the campaign got off to a flying start after Sharp bagged a goal in his return to the side in a 1-1 draw at Blackpool.
And although he failed to find the net in his second game, at home to Charlton Athletic in a 3-0 win at the Keepmoat Stadium, the striker’s previous form in the red and white hoops suggests the charity will be quids-in at the end of the season.
Money raised will go towards the Luey Jacob Sharp Foundation, the organisation the strike ace and partner Jade Fair set up after the couple’s son Luey died at just a few days old from gastroschisis, a rare condition where the baby’s internal organs grow outside the body.
Billy returned to footballing action just a few days after the tragedy and scored a goal dubbed ‘the goal from heaven’ in a 3-1 defeat against Middlesbrough.
After putting the ball in the net, the player made an emotional tribute, lifting up his shirt to reveal the message, ‘That’s for you son’, as he was mobbed by team-mates.
Last week, Sharp revealed the support he had received from Doncaster Rovers fans following the tragedy was instrumental in him returning to the Keepmoat.
A VSC spokesman said: “We are delighted that Billy has returned.
“Let’s all pull together and raise vital funds for the LJS Foundation as Billy fires us up the league.”
He began his career at Sheffield United, but first made headlines at Scunthorpe United where he scored an astonishing 53 goals in 82 games. He has also played for Reading, Nottingham Forest and Southampton.
