Doncaster Rovers: Dickov wants to wait for the right man

Landing a striker might be Paul Dickov’s top priority but he is not about to rush into making a signing.

Dickov has Rovers’ long term fortunes in mind and has pledged to wait for the right forward to become available rather than jumping in quickly.

The Rovers boss also confirmed any deal would be on a loan basis.

“We’re working overtime at the minute trying to get one in but it’s frustrating,” Dickov said.

“The one thing we don’t want to do is panic and get someone in with the one game in mind.

“I’d love to get one in for Saturday and we’re working hard on that but we’ve got to make sure it’s the right one.

“There’s 21 games left.

“If it means having the right striker for 20 of those 21 games then that’s what we’ll do.

“The fans, the board and myself know there’s a massive need to get a striker in.

“What I don’t want to do is go out and spend money, not necessarily on the wrong player but on getting someone in for the sake of it.

“I think we have to wait for the right man.

“We’ve got our targets, we’ve got our list and we’re working hard on that.”

Hull City boss Steve Bruce confirmed Rovers had made an enquiry about Tigers striker Nick Proschwitz.

But Dickov was in no mood to be drawn on individual target. However he did not act to rule out moves for Leicester’s Martyn Waghorn or Proschwitz.

He said: “It’s disrespectful to talk about players under contract at other clubs.

“We’re speaking to three or four clubs about three or four strikers.

“Another thing I don’t want is to give out names and alert other clubs so they can come in as well.

“We’re in a position at the minute where we’re waiting on clubs two or three moves down the line to make their move.

“All clubs are trying to bring players in before they release players so we need the market to kick into life.”
