Doncaster Rovers: One down, two to go for Dickov

Paul Dickov will step up his pursuit of two new signings after tying down Richie Wellens to an 18-month deal.

The midfielder ended speculation about his future by penning a new contract with Rovers following a week of uncertainty after he became a free agent.

With the Wellens headache cured, Dickov will now turn his attention to new recruits.

Club chief executive Gavin Baldwin confirmed earlier this week that the Rovers boss had been given the go-ahead to bring in two new players.

It is understood that a striker and a centre half are top of Dickov’s wish list.

But he could have further room to manoeuvre if he can offload some of Rovers’ out-of-favour players.

Though Dickov last week denied midfield pair David Syers and Kyle Bennett are up for sale, the Star understands the club will listen to offers for both men.

Striker Billy Paynter is another player who could be moved on this month.

Rovers are expected to confirm the departure of James Harper today.

The midfielder has failed to make a single matchday squad appearance this term and Rovers are known to have been actively helping him to find a new club.

An agreement has been reached with the 33-year-old to cancel his contract but paperwork is still to be finalised.
