John Ryan has described Sequentia Capital’s takeover proposal as “a once in a lifetime opportunity”.
Rovers chairman again voiced his support for a deal with the Irish-led consortium - fronted by former Westferry agent Kevin Phelan - before watching his side record their first Championship win of the season over Blackburn on Friday night.
Ryan revealed that Sequentia Capital - who are bankrolled by a Belize-based tycoon - could invest up to £40 million in Doncaster Rovers and are still hopeful of completing a takeover, despite negotiations stalling.
Rovers long-serving supremo also hinted that he feels ready for a less hands-on role in the running of the club, stating “maybe it’s time to let someone else have a go”.
“It’s stalled at the moment but I think Sequentia Capital are still keen to do a deal,” said Ryan.
“It’s just a case of whether we can get all of our ducks in a row.
“They sent me a bank statement with £40 million in it so they’ve got the money. We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out.
“I personally think it will be a great thing.
“People are saying ‘what are these people like?’ but they said that about me when I took over. I was [Ken] Richardson’s stooge for two years.
“The Doncaster psyche is always like ‘hmm, no’. But why shouldn’t we have our day in the sun? Why shouldn’t we be in the Premier League?
“With £40 million you’d have a chance wouldn’t you?
“I’ve made no secret of the fact I’m absolutely for it,” he added.
“There’s hardly a queue of people wanting to invest in football clubs and for someone to want to invest big in Doncaster Rovers, I think it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“At the moment we’re struggling to compete financially in the Championship.
“We’ve got a decent side and I think we’ll do okay but it’d be lovely to see us near the top fighting it out to get in the Premier League.
“The quality of players that were lined up would make a significant difference.”
Ryan went on to hint that, after 15 years as chairman, he feels the time is right for change at the very top.
“We try and run a good ship here and over the last few years we’ve done a good job with the resources available,” said Ryan.
“I think we can all be proud of what we’ve achieved.
“Myself, Dick [Watson] and Terry [Bramall], in my humble opinion, have done a wonderful job in running this football club.
“All I’m now saying is maybe it’s time to let someone else have a go.”
