Doncaster Rovers: We can’t rest on our laurels

Rovers first Championship win of the season was a case of practice nearly makes perfect, according to boss Paul Dickov.

But he says there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Dickov took huge satisfaction from the way his side put their training ground plans into practice on Friday night, producing a disciplined and dynamic performance to defeat Blackburn Rovers.

But he insists there is a more to come from his side - and says attention has quickly turned to tomorrow night’s tricky trip to the DW Stadium to face newly-relegated Wigan Athletic.

“It’s fantastic for me and my staff to work on things in training and then see the players believe in it out on the pitch,” said Dickov.

“One of the hardest things to do is transfer what you do on the training ground and take it out onto the pitch on a match day, and the players did that all throughout the game.

“It was the best we’ve pressed without the ball.

“We’re not going to get it right all the time but the performance was really pleasing.

“I still think we’re better than what we were on Friday though. I think we can still improve all over the park.

“We can be a bit more clinical in front of goal.

“And in the first half our distances between the back four, midfield four and front two were a little bit off.

“We sat a bit too deep in the early stages but once we sorted that out I thought we were quite comfortable.

“It’s fantastic that we won 2-0 with a really good performance and I’m talking about things to work on,” he added.

“It was important to get that first win but we’ve got a hell of a game with Wigan to contend with tomorrow night.

“We have to keep our standards high.”
