Fan Zone: Daniel Nice - The dilemma facing Doncaster Rovers

Football seems to get a little crazier with each passing season.

This year, the first game took place on the opening weekend of August, Rovers were without a match on the second because of Wigan’s involvement in the Community Shield, and there has been talk of a multi-million takeover at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The first of those scenarios may be seen as a natural development but you would certainly have got good odds on the other two events occurring back in 1998.

In April of that year, Wigan went down to a 5-0 defeat at Bristol Rovers in what is now League One, while Rovers were just about still breathing.

The opening days of the Conference were a horrendous experience but from the moment that Dave Penney took over, there has been very little for Donny fans to moan about.

The club has come an awful long way in a short of space of time; in some respects, it has come too far.

Just as Sean O’Driscoll became a victim of his own success, the club again stands at a crossroads after reaching the Championship.

Do we go hell for leather at the pursuit of a shot at the ‘Promised Land’ or accept that we are what we are?

However you dress up the takeover talk, that is essentially the question that John Ryan and the board have to answer.

Anybody pumping in millions would expect a promotion push and a host of big named players on huge wages would invariably follow.

In my opinion, that is not us. If I wanted to win every week, I would not be following Doncaster Rovers, let’s face it.

Regaining our league place looked light years away as we entered the Millennium.

The way we have gone about our business this year is how we should be; appointing a promising young manager in Paul Dickov and giving opportunities to players who have built reputations in the lower leagues, such as the impressive Mark Duffy.

If we can keep our heads above water then it will be a great achievement.

If we go down fighting, then so be it.
