Doncaster Town skipper Alex Gosney has challenged his side to remain unbeaten for the rest of the season and land a top four finish in the ECB Yorkshire Premier League.
Town are on course for their highest league finish for several years and brushed aside Sheffield United on Saturday to record a third straight league win.
But after seeing his men break into the top six, a target he set at the start of the season, young skipper Gosney has told his men not to rest on their laurels.
“We want to go unbeaten from now until the end of the season,” said Gosney (pictured above right).
“We’ve got Castleford away this weekend and we’re confident we can pick up another eight points there.
“We’re all over the top four now. That’s where we want to be.
“Since Graeme Attenborough left the club we’ve not finished anywhere near the top half so it just shows how far we’ve come this season,” he continued.
“The second team are also in a good position to go up and the thirds are doing well too.
“So if we can get that top four finish in the Yorkshire League that’d give us a solid foundation to progress again next year.”
Town made light work of seeing off United at the weekend to move onto 85 points for the season - already 24 more than last season with six games still to play.
After posting 210-8, including 50 from James Stuart and 46 from Felix Odell, spinners Simon Widdup (4-11) and Oliver Jackson (3-34) turned the screw as United collapsed from 85-1 to 122 all out.
Widdup, according to Gosney, has had a major influence on Doncaster’s young dressing room following his return to his hometown club.
The former Yorkshire opener, who left Barnsley over the winter to return to Town Field, broke the 1000-run barrier earlier this month and has also claimed 36 league wickets.
“Simon’s obviously made a big difference,” said Gosney.
“He’s brought that experience and discipline to the dressing room and the young lads have responded to that.
“The lads, both as a group and individuals, have come of age a bit in this league and the team spirit is fantastic.
“Momentum is obviously a big thing in sport and winning has helped to breed confidence.
“Lots of lads have played their part in that.
“Ollie Jackson, our left arm spinner, has bowled consistently for us throughout the season.
“He’s maybe not had the headlines but, as a captain, when you go to him you always know he’s going to bowl good areas and be economical.
“Jimmy Stuart’s also been a lot more consistent.
“And when lads have come into the side they’ve delivered.
“Nick Wright, our Australian, has come into the side from the seconds and scored runs.
“Felix Odell has just returned from university and he too has immediately scored runs.
“It’s been a good season so far but we’ve still got six games left and the aim is to really finish it in style.”
Town are currently sixth in the Yorkshire League standings, three points adrift of fifth placed Scarborough.
