Paul Dickov is close to making young Irish defender Luke McCullough his next new signing.
McCullough, 19, jetted off to Portugal on Monday with Rovers for the club’s intensive pre-season camp.
The former Manchester United youngster is likely to play some part in Rovers’ penultimate friendly against a local Portuguese side today.
But he has already done enough to catch the eye of Dickov who revealed he is close to agreeing terms with the teenager.
“Luke’s a young kid with a lot of potential,” said Dickov.
“He will take time to develop but we believe we can get the best out of him.
“We’re very close to getting something sorted out with him.
“He’s with us in Portugal and we’ll take it from there.
“We want to bring the average age of the squad down a little bit,” he added.
“Getting some talent in for the future is part of my remit here.
“We want to get the young kids involved but we also don’t want to chuck them in too early.
“It was good for Luke, and also for Liam [Wakefield] and Evan [Finnegan] to get a good run-out on Saturday.”
McCullough is a free agent after being released by United this summer. He spent a short time on loan at Cheltenham last season.
Rovers’ home game with Yeovil Town has been brought forward to Friday, November 22 (7.45pm), for live coverage on Sky Sports.
