WITH the 2011/12 season now into its last month Mattersey FC have been crowned champions of the Gainsborough and District Saturday Football League.
They have been champions elect for such a long time and the three points they have needed were duly won on Saturday, sadly without kicking a ball as Haxey FC defaulted on the game as they were unable to raise a team.
With a record of 11 wins from 12 league games they look sure to finish some way in front of their closest rivals BFC Birches.
BFC Birches and Gainsborough Town Canute Reserves doubled their league game up as a Ron Swinton Memorial Section A game and it proved to be very much to BFC Birches’ advantage after a thoroughly convincing 8-1 victory.
This win ensures that Birches will finish as runners-up in the League and also guarantees their place in the semi-final of the Ron Swinton Memorial Trophy where their opponents will be Harworth Colliery, the team they also play this week in the Trinity Challenge Cup Final.
Harworth booked their place in the semis with a 7-1 home win over a gallant but ultimately outclassed Fox and Hounds Willingham.

Sunday
IT’S been a great week for Gainsborough and District Sunday League cup football with the final of the Trinity Trophy being last Tuesday night on the Northolme in front of a very good and appreciative crowd, and on Sunday the semi-finals of the Junior Trophy and quarter-final games in both the Sporting Club Cup and the Presidents Cup took place.
The Trinity Trophy Final proved to be one of the best finals seen in recent years when FS Clumber and Real Ropery produced a game worthy of any final, Ropery eventually sealing a fantastic 4-3 victory after extra time, helped in no small measure by their ace marksman Lee Bognar who scored a hat-trick.
The semi-finals of the Junior Trophy saw White Horse edge past fierce rivals Moorends SC 2-1 and their opponents in the final will be Epworth FC who triumphed 3-0 over Clarborough.
FS Clumber took a giant stride to claiming the Premier League title with a 10-2 demolition of Rose and Crown and they now require just a single point to be sure of the Championship.
Leverton United were thumped 9-0 by a superb Kings Arms team and Real Ropery ensured they would at least finish as runners-up in the top division after a narrow 1-0 victory over Vine Inn Athletic.
In Division One, Maltings FC moved up to fourth when, after being three goals down at half-time to Harworth Pavilion, they gave a storming second half performance to earn a superb 4-3 victory, while Canutes FC eked out a narrow 2-1 win at East Markham.
