Luddington were edged out by last year’s champions Broughton, who picked up their first win of the Broughton and District Evening League campaign with a 38-run victory.
2012 winners Broughton owed much to their talented wicketkeeper/batsman Nick Dobbs who proved to be the difference between the teams with a classy innings of 39 as they posted a winning total of 117 all out.
Neil Simpson was first to go for Broughton when Liam McAnaney brilliantly threw down the stumps from near the boundary, leaving Simpson out for eight.
That brought Brett Fish to the crease to join opener Robbie Glentworth.
The duo struck up a steady partnership that took the total to 48 before Glentworth was caught by Graeme Fletcher off Jon Wroot for 30.
That dismissal however led to the arrival of Dobbs who immediately began to show his ability with the bat in hand.
Fish was out for 20 with the score on 89, to a spectacular catch from bowler Wroot who held his nerve.
Luddington fought back as Wroot quickly picked up two more wickets shortly after. First Shaun Clark was caught for one, before Craig Hallbut was bowled.
It was McAnaney who took the all-important wicket of Dobbs who was caught in the deep by Arron Curry.
Nevertheless Dobbs’ total of 39 came from just 25 deliveries and included two towering sixes.
Wroot finished his spell by bowling Lee Stothard to take his figures to 5-33 before McAnaney took centre stage again by as he wrapped up the tail.
He ended with a total of 4-21, as Broughton closed on 117 all out.
Tom Morwood ending the innings on 9no in only his second ever competitive match.
After making a relatively positive finish to their bowling, Luddington made the worst possible start to their response.
Russell Fletcher was dismissed in the first over after being bowled by Shaun Clark.
Scott Buttrick joined skipper Andy Lawson in the middle and a steady partnership saw them take the score to 32 before Buttrick was brilliantly stumped by Nick Dobbs off Robbie Ward for 10.
Jamie Arrowsmith scored three before he was bowled by Clark.
The big wicket fell just after when skipper Lawson was stumped by Craig Hall having made a respectable 35.
Mark Fletcher batted well throughout the rest of the innings but Luddington were just not able to find the inspiration at the crease to edge them closer to the required total.
Hall went on to pick up 4-11 from his three overs as Luddington ended on 79-8.
