Doncaster Rovers: Woods eyes fresh start

Former Rovers boss Sean O’Driscoll is ready to give Martin Woods a chance to rebuild his career at Bristol City.

Woods has been offered the chance to link up with O’Driscoll for pre-season training after Doncaster decided not to renew his contract.

The 27-year-old is also weighing up a similar offer from Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy, who he played under at Sunderland, as he attempts to put an injury ravaged three years behind him.

Woods has made just 39 appearances over the last three and a half years due to a recurring groin problem and admitted last year that he had broken down in tears as his injury hell showed no signs of relenting.

Among the club’s highest earners, Rovers decided to end Woods’ six-year stay at the Keepmoat Stadium this summer when he was released along with namesake Gary, Jordan Ball, Lee Fowler and Paddy Mullen.

But the Scot is currently stepping up his rehabilitation and hopes to be fully fit in time for pre-season training next month after seeking specialist help in Milan.

The former Leeds and Rotherham midfielder is confident he can get his career back on track after Italian experts prescribed an orthodontic solution - including wearing a dental brace - to effectively re-align his body.

Woods returned to fitness last summer and started the season as a regular in Dean Saunders’ side before being sidelined with calf and thigh problems.

He made 131 appearances for Rovers, scoring 10 goals.
