a technical area rogue

Paul Dickov is unlikely to make many friends on the touchline at the Keepmoat.

That is the verdict of the man himself who has no illusions about his demeanour in the technical area.

“I’m a bit of a d**k on the touchline at times,” Dickov said when questioned about what kind of manager he is.

Rovers’ new boss followed up with a more serious description of his approach and a simple one at that.

“I’m a honest guy who will work really hard,” the 40-year-old said.

“I’ll set an example to the players and I will ask two things of them every single day: work as hard as they can and do the best they can.

“If you do those two things in any walk of life, never mind football, you’ve got a great chance of being successful.

“If you add that to the quality of the players that are at Doncaster and the experience of the players, then we’ve got a great chance.”

Despite a rather stellar playing career, former Scotland international Dickov admits he always wanted to become a manager, even opting to call time on his on-field career early.

He said: “Going into management was something that has always interested me.

“When I took the Oldham job there were a lot of offers on the table to continue playing for a few years.

“Once that job came up I wanted to take it.

“I was a lucky boy to have the career I had as a player.

“And I feel blessed to have gone straight into management from playing and then into a Championship club so soon.”
