Doncaster Town produced a fine all-round performance to dispose of Hull and record their second league win of the season.

Gareth Cox and Simon Widdup starred with the bat before Town’s slow bowlers ripped through the visitors.

Leg spinner Ashley Knowles claimed four wickets as Doncaster recorded a much-needed 54-run victory to give themselves some breathing space at the foot of the table.

Cox (79) and Widdup (61) put on 108 for the first wicket at Town Field, before James Stuart (40) and skipper Alex Gosney (26no) chipped in to see the hosts reach 240-4 from their 55 overs.

Hull’s opening pair of Tim Appleyard (62) and Peter Shally (34) got Hull off to a similarly impressive start, sharing a stand of 98 for the first wicket.

But the introduction of spin duo Knowles and Oliver Jackson turned the game in Doncaster’s favour.

Knowles removed Shally on the way to collecting figures of 4-61 from 15 overs.

And Jackson was equally effective, snaring 3-52 from 17 overs as Hull struggled to counter Town’s squeeze on proceedings.

Widdup also took 2-12 as the visitors closed on 186-9, denying Doncaster a maximum point return.

Doncaster’s second successive home win saw them move onto 17 points, three places above bottom side Rotherham who are still pointless.

Widdup and Stuart were in the runs again on Sunday in a League Cup tie at home to Yorkshire Academy, but the White Rose prospects ran out comfortable 140-run winners.

Curtis Free (3-66) was the pick of the bowlers when the Academy chose to bat first and reached 282-5, including 102 from Jonathan Tattersall.

Widdup (50) and Stuart (49) offered resistance in the coloured clothing contest but Doncaster limped to 142 all out in reply.

Town face a gruelling triple header this weekend.

They travel to fellow strugglers Sheffield United in the league on Saturday before hosting Harrogate on Bank Holiday Monday.

Sandwiched in between is the rescheduled ECB National Knockout game at home to Wickersley Old Village, starting at 1pm at Town Field on Sunday.
