Doncaster Belles: We’re all in this together

Doncaster Rovers Belles captain Leandra Little insists team spirit will be vital in overcoming the disappointment of FAWSL ‘relegation’.

The Belles suffered an almighty setback when the FA announced they would be replaced by Manchester City in next year’s FA Women’s Super League.

However skipper Little told the Free Press that the mood in the changing room is one of ‘unity’ despite the crushing decision to demote the famous club.

“The timing of the announcement was the most disappointing thing but there’s nothing we can do about it other than just get on and enjoy our football,” she said.

“Our word for the season is ‘unity’ because we know we have to stick together, work for each other and put in the best performances we can.

“In all honesty, the dressing room is buzzing despite the decision. We have such a strong team spirit which will help us throughout this season.”

The Belles, who were undone by a solitary Natasha Dowie goal against Liverpool in the Continental Cup on Saturday, have been boosted by the knowledge that a good win against Everton on May 18 could see them reach the semi-finals.

But tonight it’s back to league action when the Belles travel to face FA Cup finalists Bristol Academy - with the added incentive of avenging their earlier 2-0 Continental Cup defeat to the South Westerners.

Belles boss John Buckley has also been given the good news that centre back Little will be fit enough to start after coming off against Liverpool with mild concussion.

“I think we can certainly go there and get our first three points this season,” Little added.
