What a finale to end the season. Nobody at Griffin Park will ever forget those 18 seconds.
Football can be an incredible, and also a cruel, sport. That was amply demonstrated on Saturday.
In those 18 seconds we went from agony to ecstasy as Brentford missed their penalty and we went up the other end and scored.
When the penalty was given I just slumped back in my chair and turned to my wife Lynne and said the footballing gods had deserted us. The play-offs were beckoning.
But you hardly had time to catch your breath between Marcello Trotta slamming the ball against the bar and James Coppinger tapping home in front of our delirious supporters. An unforgettable moment in time.
And to see all our supporters, all 1,800 of them, celebrating was a great sight. What a wonderful feeling to go up automatically.
Then the news came through that Bournemouth had been held to a draw at Tranmere and we were champions. It was just getting better and better.
Brentford will always be remembered for those highly dramatic 18 seconds.
It was wonderful to see the happiness on the fans’ faces in that double decker stand, especially after the trauma of last season and the resultant relegation.
To be heading back to the Championship at the first attempt is a credit to everyone involved. We can look forward to visiting some wonderful stadiums again as Doncaster Rovers pit their wits against the best that the Championship has to offer.
Let’s hope that games will not be decided on budgets, or QPR will end up beating us 20-0!
We’ll be very busy over the summer putting together a competitive squad. We’ll make a real show of it in the Championship.
You can do your bit to help too by purchasing a season ticket. We’ll be coming up against teams who average, in most cases, 20,000 gates.
So please do your bit for the club. It will make such a difference.
Many thanks to everyone who went to Brentford, the annual awards night at the Dome and then turned up at the stadium on Monday for the presentation and open top bus ride.
I don’t know about you, but after all that excitement I need a few days now to recharge my batteries!
Enjoy your summer but stay close to the club. Help your local club in every way you can.
