Scunthorpe captain Paul Reid admits he wasn’t surprised by United’s relegation to League Two - conceding: “We’ve not been good enough to stay up”.

Despite a final day 3-1 victory over Swindon, the Iron were relegated because Colchester beat Carlisle.

“We gave ourselves a glimmer of hope with the win at MK Dons last week, and we got ourselves a decent result against Swindon, but the damage was done a long time ago,” Reid said.

“We started the season terribly, and that screams ‘relegation battle’ to me.

“We never really managed to escape that bottom four.

“We won those three games in a row in February and got away from it a bit, but then we got dragged back in.

“I don’t think that we can blame anything like luck - we’ve literally not been good enough over the course of the season.”

New Iron chairman Peter Swann, however, dismissed rumours that boss Brian Laws would leave the club: “Brian will be the manager as we go forward,” he said.
