Doncaster Rovers: 13-goal striker is Paynt-ing by numbers

Billy Paynter is happy to let his goals do the talking - after becoming increasingly frustrated with bench duty.

Rovers’ leading scorer took his tally to 13 for the season with a crucial second half double at Crewe on Saturday.

The 28-year-old striker has pleaded his case with boss Brian Flynn for greater involvement after being restricted to late substitute appearances in his last five appearances.

But the Merseysider accepts that the best way of making a point to his manager is by finding the net.

“The past couple of weeks I have been frustrated. I’ve been itching to get on,” said Paynter, who also missed the whole of January after being sent off against Sheffield United on New Year’s Day.

“I’ve argued my case [with the manager] that I should be getting on, and it’s been a bit disappointing at times.

“But the best thing I can do is score goals.

“At the end of the day it’s down to whatever the manager and coaching staff feel is best for the team,” he added.

“I was really happy to score twice on Saturday.

“I was thrilled for the other lads and the fans as much as anything. It was important we came away with another win.

“Hopefully we can continue that on Saturday against Notts County.”

The mid-table Magpies will visit the Keepmoat Stadium with just pride to play for at the weekend.

But, according to Paynter, that could be even more dangerous than playing a side still involved in a battle at the top or bottom of the table.

“Playing against teams with nothing to play for, when lads are just playing for themselves and new contracts, is dangerous,” he said.

“All the pressure is on us.

“We’re fighting for promotion and it’s all down to us and what we do on the pitch.”

Paynter, meanwhile, has vowed to continue with his unusual ‘headless chicken’ dance every time he scores.

“I’ve stuck with the chicken,” said Paynter.

“It’s a funny celebration. If I keep on scoring, I’ll keep on doing it.”
