Boxing: Josh Wale v Gavin McDonnell edges closer

Stefy Bull says he will glady book a South Yorkshire super fight between his man Gavin McDonnell and Brampton’s Josh Wale.

Wale said last week that ‘he knows he is better’ than British title hopeful McDonnell, who is trained by Bull in Mexborough.

In response, Bull says he is willing to make the bout and will gladly put it on his July 6 show at Doncaster’s Dome.

“I’ve heard what Josh has had to say about Gav and my response is simple – if he wants it, he can have it,” Bull said.

“I will put it on my next show and we can start talking about it as soon he wants.

“It’s time to put up or shut up. The cards are on the table.

“I’d even go as far as doing a dual promotion with (Wale’s manager) Carl Greaves.

“This would be a massive fight for the area and I’m sure we’d sell out the Dome with it.

“The only time in the past the Dome has been sold out for boxing is when I fought Josh’s brother Gwyn and I think this would be as big as that.

“Josh is clearly confident but so are we.

“I’m not interested in getting into a war of words with them at this stage.

“But I’ll just say that I wouldn’t be putting Gav in there if I wasn’t confident that he’d win it.

“Josh has been in with some very good kids but Gav is improving all the time.”

McDonnell will meet Paul Economides in a British super bantamweight title eliminator at the Dome next Friday.

And should his man be victorious, Bull is keen to make the stakes of a McDonnell-Wale showdown higher than mere local pride.

He said: “There’s all sorts of avenues we can go down with this if Gav does the business.

“I’m sure the BBBoC would consider making it a final eliminator for the British title.

“Or it could be for the Commonwealth title because I’m sure Carl Frampton will relinquish.

“But if there’s nothing on the line, this is a fight big enough to carry a show.

“I want to book fights that the public want to see, and this is definitely one of those.”
