Doncaster Rovers: Nathan Tyson wants regular starts

Hungry hitman Nathan Tyson has got the bit between his teeth as he looks to cement a regular starting role for Rovers.

Tyson starred in Tuesday night’s 5-0 execution of troubled Crawley – and now he’s expected to be handed a second start in five days when Rovers host Yeovil at the Keepmoat tomorrow.

“I didn’t know whether I was starting the other night because the gaffer obviously has his own agenda to what he thinks is the best team,” admitted Tyson.

“But I’m here enjoying myself and I’m here supportive of the team whether I’m on the bench or off it.

“As far as I’m concerned, whether I’m starting or not starting, I’m here to be a team player.

“I’ve got my own personal goals and I just hope everyone else is on board to achieve that this season.

“I’ve been itching to get a start, so it felt good to play. But the most important thing is just to be part of the team.

“I hope I can get in the side and play regularly, but we all need to pull together because we’ve got a lot of tough games coming up.”

Tyson bagged his eighth goal of the season in only his second start since late November in midweek.

And having overcome a string of “niggling” injuries in December, the former Nottingham Forest and Derby marksman is ready to make up for lost time.

“I set targets, so it would be nice to get a couple more goals to get into double figures and then take it on from there,” said Tyson. “I’ve got a little target me and [Rovers’ forwards coach] Shaun Goater have spoken about.

“My injury was a setback, but I’m back on board now and hopefully I can reach that target and push on.

“I had so many niggles back then. November was absolutely horrific, so something was going to happen.

“Luckily nothing really bad happened because I was just getting kicked all over the park, getting strains and all sorts of niggling injuries.

“So I used to December to take the strain of me and to manage different things.

“It worked and the injuries got better and I feel a lot stronger now for having had that time off.

“Hopefully now I can get a run of games under my belt.”

Tuesday night’s five-star win was Rovers’ biggest of the season, but Tyson has stressed he and his teammates can’t get carried away and expected to the same for the visit of the Glovers.

“We’d just take a 1-0 win to be honest,” added Tyson. “The most important thing is doing the basics right and putting in the hard graft.

“I’ve said to the lads that if we just keep our game simple we can do really well in games.

“But if we start complicating things and over-playing things, then there’s no point. We’d end up losing games like we did against Walsall [a 2-0 home defeat].”
