Paul Dickov is today expected to successfully complete his hunt for a striker by snapping up Uche Ikpeazu on loan for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old Watford forward travelled to Doncaster yesterday to meet with Rovers officials ahead of rubberstamping a move.

Reports in Watford suggested Rovers would be facing competition from an unnamed Championship club.

But it is understood Rovers are the front runners for his signature and should complete the deal today.

A Rovers spokesperson told the Star: “Uche is on his way to Doncaster and we’re hoping to sign him on loan until the end of the season.”

Dickov is understood to have watched Ikpeazu in action for Crewe on Saturday in their 1-0 win at Port Vale.

And he looks to have landed his man in time to feature in Saturday’s trip to Chesterfield.

Ikpeazu and Watford had only on Monday agreed for the striker to remain on loan with Crewe for the remainder of the season.

But he was recalled by the Hornets yesterday morning, much to Crewe’s surprise.

Alex boss Steve Davis said: “It is disappointing. He’s a player we thought we’d have until then end of the season. There were no signs there’d be any recall.

“I’m not sure Uche knew much about it either. He’d just been sorted out with a flat and was very comfortable. You can never take anything for granted, it can happen with loans.”

Former Reading youth player Ikpeazu spent the second half of last season on loan at Gresty Road, scoring four goals in 15 appearances.

He has been back with Crewe since November and netted twice in eight appearances.
