Stephen Bywater says he is determined to repay Paul Dickov for handing him the opportunity to get his career back on track.

And for Rovers’ new goalkeeper, that is helping to mount a strong push for promotion in the second half of the season.

Bywater says he felt lucky to be offered the chance to join Rovers after it was made clear his time with Millwall had reached its end.

“When an opportunity like this came along I felt lucky really,” Bywater said.

“The gaffer has given me a chance and I want to repay him and do as well as I can for the rest of the season.

“I really like being here. My gut feeling was ‘what a club this is.

“Hopefully we can get back up into the Championship.

“We’ve got some good players and we’re in a good position.

“It’s where I like to be, in and around the play-offs.

“We’ll see what happens from here.”

Bywater got his Rovers career off to the best possible start with a pair of clean sheets after signing a deal until the end of the season following his release by Millwall.

The 33-year-old - who won automatic promotion from League One with Sheffield Wednesday three years ago - said he felt at home right away after arriving at the Keepmoat.

And he says a togetherness in the squad was immediately apparent and is something that must be maintained if the club is to mount a serious promotion push.

He said: “I played a game for Millwall U21 on the Monday and I was training in Doncaster on the Thursday.

“I’ve settled in nicely. I settle in anywhere really because I get on with anyone.

“The travelling is similar for me to what it was with Sheffield Wednesday.

“I’ve enjoyed it here so far, it’s been really good.

“It’s a good set of lads. They feel together.

“It’s not a big squad so we all need to stay together and look after each other.”
