Westwoodside Rangers continued their charge at the top end of Scunthorpe and District Division Three with a 5-2 win over third-placed Scotter United Reserves.

Rangers are now just nine points off the top of the league with four games in hand on the leaders.

With only one defeat in their last eight outings in all competitions, manager Kev Blow is enjoying his team’s run and says their performance was among the best of the season.

“We started well and played some great football and never looked in any danger,” said Blow.

“The defenders looked classy playing on a bobbly pitch from the back and we looked as strong as I have seen this year.

“For next week’s game, the younger lads and all the lads that haven’t started will get their chance because we are already through to the next round.”

Westwoodside got off to a good start and controlled the first 15 minutes of play.

On the quarter hour mark, Kyle Blow struck a free-kick from 30 yards out that swerved into the top corner and left the keeper rooted.

That strike set the tone for the game and Westwoodside never looked back, and Harry Scott soon had the second for Rangers.

The score remained 2-0 until the break when Westwoodside made two changes, but the change in personnel didn’t affect the flow of the game, as Michael Fenlon notched a third for the marauding visitors early in the second half.

However, it wasn’t to be all plain sailing as Scotter struck back twice to reduce the deficit to one goal, but that served to wake Westwoodside up, who struck back.

Dec Bacon bagged twice in the closing stages to secure the three points on his return from a spell with Winterton; his two classy finishes ensured Rangers stay in contention at the top end of the league.

This weekend’s meeting with Crosby Colts Juniors in the Johnsons Transport Ironstone Cup will be a good opportunity for Blow to experiment with his side, as both teams have already progressed to the semi-finals with a game to spare.
