Head coach Glen Kenworthy was ‘gutted’ after seeing history repeat itself in Sunday’s South Yorkshire Championship derby at Castle Park.
It proved painful viewing for the New Zealander as Rotherham fly-half James McKinney kicked a late goal to claim victory, just as Garry Law had done when the two teams last met at Castle Park two years ago.
“I don’t think Rotherham deserved to win, I think we gave it to them,” said Kenworthy, reflecting on Titans’ 23-21 success.
“I’d never question the spirit of the players but it’s the top six inches in some of the boys making wrong decisions and putting us in those sort of situations we found ourselves in on Sunday.
“Their two tries were like own goals in football and take them out of the game and we’d have won quite comfortably.
“As I say, I’m gutted, but trying to put a positive spin on it it was a vast improvement on the game at Meadow Lane and we ended up getting something out of it.
“We aren’t looking like a team who have lost their last six league games and that is the frustrating thing about it.”
“To hit back from 20-9 down to lead 21-20 with four minutes to go and end up losing was really disappointing.
“They hadn’t broken us down all game but we gave away a senseless penalty.
“We’ve got to learn from our mistakes and get ready for Bedford on Saturday.
“They had a good win at Moseley so they’ll be on a high.
“They are also out of the relegation battle and are playing well at home so it’s going to be a massive task to go there and repeat our B&I Cup win, but we need a win.”
