Paul Dickov admits he is contemplating using the 4-1-4-1 system that worked so well at Swindon last week when Rovers return to the Keepmoat this afternoon.
Though admitting the formation is traditionally defensive-minded, Dickov says Rovers showed it does not have to be that way as they ran out 1-0 winners at the County Ground.
And with Rovers continuing to struggle for wins at home, he could stick with the formation for which he abandoned a 4-2-3-1 when Coventry City visit today.
“As much as people look at 4-1-4-1 as defensive, we’ve got a lot of attacking players in there,” Dickov told the Star.
“When you’ve got the likes of Theo Robinson, Dean Furman, Richie Wellens, James Coppinger and Kyle Bennett in there, you can’t really call it defensive.
“If anything, it allows us to get back a bit of width we missed with the diamond in midfield.
“Paul Keegan sitting behind them allows Richie and Dean to bomb forward.”
Dickov was full of praise for the part Furman played in the success of the formation as he returned to the starting line-up for the first time in two months.
The South Africa skipper starred with his running, both offensively and defensively in a true box-to-box showing.
Dickov said: “Dean was a massive part of it not being too defensive.
“There’s no point in sitting in defensively if you’re not getting runners beyond Theo Robinson at times.
“Dean did that so well, along with the wide players who were excellent at getting the ball up the pitch and causing problems.”
Dickov admits it was a difficult decision to drop Curtis Main to the bench in order to switch formations.
And he says it would be a similar tough choice to leave out any of the starting XI from last weekend, if he was to switch back.
“It’s difficult but that’s why I’m here,” he said,
“It was a difficult decision to leave Curtis out, especially after him scoring in the previous game.
“We have to look at the best way forward rather than worrying about keeping individuals happy.
“Curtis took it well and I’d expect nothing less.”
Dickov may be forced into at least one change with Kyle Bennett rated as 50-50 after suffering a hamstring strain at Swindon.
Harry Forrester is poised to start should he miss out.
