Doncaster Rovers have opened talks with Sheffield United about a longer term deal for Andy Butler.

Butler’s initial loan is due to expire in the first week of January and an extension to that loan seems the most likely scenario - although a free transfer switch for the out of favour Blades defender has not been ruled out.

Rovers have also entered into contract negotiations with defenders Reece Wabara and Luke McCullough - with boss Paul Dickov admitting he already has one eye on next season.

Dickov said: “I spoke with Nigel Clough last week and Gavin [Baldwin] has been speaking to Sheffield United to try and see if there is something we can do [with Andy Butler] in January.

“We’re speaking to Luke and Reece about extending their contracts as well. That is something that’s ongoing at the minute.

“Come January we’ll reassess what injuries we have, and where the squad is, and we’ll take it from there.

“We’ll sit down with all the players in January - we’ve got a list - and without getting too ahead of ourselves we want to start thinking about next season.

“We want to try and make sure we plan early this year.”

Meanwhile, Dean Furman is back in training and in contention to return to the squad at Swindon tomorrow. Nathan Tyson is still ruled out.
