Paul Dickov column: I’m confident Doncaster Rovers’ home form will soon improve

There is no getting away from the fact that our home form is not what it needs to be.

We have sat down and spoke with the players at length about it. I want to keep the details of that to myself for now but it should be known that we’re all as determined as each other to turn this around, and quickly.

I feel that we should have won our last two home games against Notts County and Sheffield United. And with that, I feel we’re not far away.

But what we need to do is start taking our away form and performances and bringing those back here. Do that and the record will change very quickly and stay changed.

There doesn’t have to be any major switch in how we go about things to make sure that happens.

We have shown away from home recently at both Rochdale and Barnsley that we’re able to break teams down with intelligent possession play, good passing and a high tempo.

More often that not, you’re having to break teams down at home if you’re going to have any success. You’ve got to move teams around the pitch and we’ve been very good at that recently on the road.

The key for the players is being more patient with the build-up play but couple that with a teal tempo as well. At times we’ve kept the ball for the sake of it, then felt the need to get it forward too quickly and ended up losing it.

I changed things around in the JP Trophy game the other night to make sure certain players would be fit for the Gillingham game at the Keepmoat on Saturday.

It disrupted the flow of the side a bit and I accept responsibility for that. But I’m confident the home supporters will see much more of the good work we’ve been doing away this weekend.

We have players on form in the team like James Coppinger, Kyle Bennett and Richie Wellens which certainly helps things. Those three interchange really well. There’s real fluidity in the team.

Our front two have been a real handful as well and the full backs are really getting into the game a lot more.

When we have those players on form and fit, we do look a good team.

Our fans have been fantastic and they’re desperate to see us perform at home.

On Saturday we want to come out all guns blazing and get that elusive home win.
