Maxi Hughes hopes to set the record straight after his controversial draw with the hotly-tipped Martin J Ward last weekend.

The Doncaster fighter ventured into Ward’s backyard in Bethnal Green for a British super featherweight title eliminator, live on Sky Sport.

And he turned in an impressive performance to the extent that most felt he was the one hard done by with the majority draw decision.

Hughes now hope initial talk of a rematch becomes a reality, particularly if the return bout could be made closer to home.

“I’m more than happy to do it again and set the record straight,” Hughes said.

“Barry Hearn spoke to my missus after the fight and said it would be a great undercard fight for the next Leeds show.

“Let’s do it.”

The 24-year-old said the draw decision felt like a defeat but recognised the size of the achievement in taking something from one of Matchroom Boxing’s hot prospects and on enemy soil.

He said: “He’s from there, he’s Matchroom’s golden boy. I know I haven’t won but I’ve upset the applecart.

“I’m gutted that I didn’t win and it’s still hard to describe how I feel. I thought I’d done enough.

“I don’t know whether him and his camp underestimated me but I know a lot of people did.

“I think I shocked a lot of people, sticking in there against a good kid who they think a lot of.”

Hughes also admitted having two coaches who have guided his career in his thoughts in the build-up to the bout.

He said: “I wanted to win it for my late amateur coach Ken Blood and John Hargate.

“I didn’t quite do it but I hope I did them proud.”

Doncaster Plant coach Blood died last month while Hargate passed away earlier this year.
