Clingan hopes to face old club Coventry

MIDFIELDER Sammy Clingan will need no introduction to Sky Blues fans if he features in tomorrow’s Doncaster Rovers-Coventry City clash at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Clingan, who is hoping to win himself a permanent deal with Rovers, turned down a new contract offer from Coventry during their relegation season.

Clingan played several games for the Sky Blues against Rovers in recent meetings.

Coventry, who looked at one stage of the season to be in danger of successive relegations, arrive at the Keepmoat as one of the form teams in League One having lost just once in their last seven league games.

They scored five goals in a game for the second time during that sequence when beating Walsall 5-1 in their Midlands derby last week.

It was the first time that the Sky Blues had come from behind (they trailed 1-0) to win a game for nearly four years.

Leading scorer David McGoldrick and second top scorer Carl Baker shared four of the goals.

McGoldrick, in particular, poses a threat to Rovers’ hopes of a third successive home win.

The brace against the Saddlers further enhanced his reputation in the game and is attracting scouts from several Championship outfits and other clubs.

But the 25-year-old admits he feels a sense of loyalty to the Sky Blues for giving him the chance to get his career back on track with regular first-team football.

“It’s nice to feel wanted,” he said. “There have been a couple of clubs I was going to go to at the start of the season suddenly turning up at games.

“They didn’t want me then but are now sniffing about.

“I owe a lot to Coventry because they have given me the chance to play every week score a lot of goals.”
