Doncaster Rovers: My preferred system is 4-4-2 - Dickov

Paul Dickov says 4-4-2 is his preferred system.

The Scot has toyed with several formations this season, including 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-4-1.

But following the return to fitness of powerful forward Curtis Main - who Dickov sees as a key man - Rovers’ boss is keen to continue with two out and out strikers.

“We’ve tinkered with different systems, depending on the personnel we’ve had available,” Dickov told The Star.

“But my preferred system is the system we started the season with, and that’s 4-4-2.

“The different personnel we now have available allows us to go back to that.”

Former Middlesbrough man Main came through 62 minutes of Saturday’s goalless draw with MK Dons before being replaced by Theo Robinson.

“Having Curtis back is a big plus for us,” said Dickov.

“It was a big blow for us losing him because he started the season looking like a top player, which we know he is.

“He’s still short of match fitness but it was important we got an hour into him. He’ll be better going forward for that.”

Dickov, meanwhile, also hailed the instant impact of on-loan Sheffield United defender Andy Butler.

“Andy made a massive difference,” he said.

“It came as no surprise to me because he’s a player I’ve tried to sign three or four times. He’s a leader and he’s a calming influence.

“I think because of that we saw the best of Reece [Wabara], Luke [McCullough] and especially Cedric [Evina], who had someone next to him communicating and talking to him.

“I thought the whole team did well defensively.

“The effort and the desire they put in to get the result was great.”
