Doncaster Phoenix maintained their lead at the top of Yorkshire One but needed all their composure as they held on for a 16-14 victory at Scarborough, writes Frazer Snowdon.
Phoenix had established themselves as the better side in the first half, turning round 8-0 ahead.
But the turning point in the game came early in the second half when they were handed two yellow cards and Scarborough ran in two tries while the visitors were down to 13 men.
Phoenix had gone ahead with a try by No 8 forward Ryan Peacey and a penalty goal by fly-half Ben Miller.
The Castle Park side were then handed two cards in the space of two minutes, and defended well in the circumstances.
Despite another penalty goal from Miller, Phoenix found themselves trailing 14-11 until, with five minutes remaining, they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when Peacey crashed over for his second try, giving them four points and leaving Scarborough to salvage a losing bonus.
Wath on Dearne ran out decisive 28-12 winners over high-flying York in their clash at Moor Road.
Previously second in the table, York opened the scoring with an unconverted try, but Wath were in the driving seat for most of the first half as stand-off Anthony Barrett and prop James McCarthy ran in tries.
Barrett converted both to add to his early penalty goal.
Barrett added two more penalties early in the second half as York came back with a converted try, but Wath sealed their win when, from a five-metre line-out, the forwards pushed over and No 8 Matt Burrows was credited with the touchdown.
Thornensians moved up to second place in Yorkshire Three with a bonus winning 43-10 victory at Rotherham Phoenix.
Thorne ran in seven tries, with the season’s leading scorer Brett Hunt adding another hat trick on the wing.
Flanker Arron Holt, No 8 Ryan Pilley, centre Oli Cox and prop Rob Russell were the other try scorers, with Stuart Hughes converting four.
Rossington Hornets went down 7-31 to Hallamshire in Yorkshire Five.
