DONCASTER Rovers manager Dean Saunders has expressed his disappointment at their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Section quarter-final exit at the hands of Crewe Alexandra last night.
Rovers were beaten 5-3 on penalties after striker Chris Brown levelled the scores at 1-1 in stoppage time after the Railwaymen had taken the lead in first half stoppage time.
Crewe, who converted all five spot kicks, were always in the driving seat after Robbie Blake hit the crossbar with Rovers second penalty with the home side leading 2-1.
Saunders said: “It’s disappointing because I thought that we were going to go on to win the game after Brownie scored.”
The Welshman told The Star that he had tried to get the tie called off on Monday due to a bug sweeping through the club.
“Tommy Spurr and Jamie McCombe went down with it and I was worried that other players might go down with it before the game,” he said.
