Walsall v Doncaster Rovers: Ex-Doncaster man Baxendale knows Rovers’ ability

Former Rovers youngster James Baxendale fully expects Doncaster to adjust quickly to life in League One - but he’s hoping that doesn’t happen on Saturday.

The Walsall midfielder, who featured briefly for Doncaster during 2011 and 2012 before moving to the Saddlers, is one of three of Dean Smith’s squad who have featured in the red of Rovers.

The 22-year-old Doncaster-born footballer is expected to start against his hometown club alongside ex-Rovers defender James O’Connor.

James Chambers, another former Rovers defender, returned to training this week and could also play at part in Saturday’s League One clash at the Banks’s Stadium.

And Baxendale knows all about the threat that ex-Championship side Doncaster possess despite the side’s inconsistent start in the third tier.

“They haven’t quite settled to life in League One just yet which has surprised me a little because they’ve got a lot of the same players from last season,” the former Hereford loanee told the club’s official website.

“I fully expect them to adjust and kick on up the league - I just don’t want it to start on Saturday.

“The League has showed already that on any given day anyone can beat each other. It must be great for a neutral with so many upsets and goals flying in.

“It’s a testament to League One, but we’ve got to try and find that consistency that we’re capable of and pick up some winning results.”

Ben Purkiss, Tom Bradshaw and Jordan Cook all returned to training this week for Walsall.
