Doncaster Rovers: Furman’s lift after new role success

Dean Furman feels he may have found the position which could earn him regular starts for Rovers.

The South Africa international’s game time has largely been dictated by injuries and suspensions to other midfielders since his permanent switch from Oldham last summer.

But Saturday’s win over Chesterfield saw Furman impress when deployed in a more advanced role, ahead of two holding players, staking his claim for a starting berth.

“It’s something I discussed with the gaffer pre-season,” Furman told the Star.

“It’s about helping the team, not neccessarily me, by getting forward more, taking players away with runs and freeing up more space for the likes of James Coppinger and Richie Wellens to get on the ball.

“In the few games I’ve played there, I’ve really enjoyed it. Hopefully goals are just around the corner for me as well.

“It’s something we’ve looked at and I feel I’ve got good energy and I can get forward as well as contributing defensively.

“We’ve got good players who like to sit in like Paul Keegan and Marc De Val and obviously Richie will pick up the ball from deep.

“If I can be slightly different to other central midfielders and get forward, that will help us.”

Furman is hoping to keep his place for tonight’s Capital One Cup third round clash at managerless Fulham.

And after beating the Cottagers’ Championship rivals Watford in the previous round, the 26-year-old says Rovers head to the capital brimming with confidence.

He said: “We went to Watford full of confidence and with no fear and it was one of the best performances I’ve been involved with at the club.

“We’re looking forward to going down there and we want to progress.

“It’s a great game for us, we’ve enjoyed the run so far and we’re not ready for it to end.”
