Richie Wellens has made his intentions abundantly clear - he does not want to hang around in League One.
The 34-year-old midfielder signed a new two-year contract at Doncaster in the summer after turning down a move to Blackpool and at least one other Championship club.
But he intends to spend as little time as possible back in the third tier and is targeting an instant return to the Championship with Rovers.
“I don’t want to play in League One,” said Wellens.
“So I’ve got my head round the fact what I’ve got to do now is get back to being one hundred per cent fit first and foremost, and get back to playing the way I know I can play.
“If I play the way I know I can play, then at this level hopefully we’ll be at the top end of the league.
“If I can get promoted and get back to the Championship then I’m happy and everyone else is happy.
“So I’ve got to work hard now to get where I want to be - and that’s playing in the Championship.”
Wellens sat out the majority of the opening month for contractual reasons, admitting he spent those Saturdays on the sofa watching Gillette Soccer Saturday.
He is playing catch-up fitness wise. And he says Rovers, as a team, have also still got plenty of work to do to get up to speed - more so than tomorrow’s opponents Chesterfield.
“More often than not when you get a team that’s been relegated, it’s quite difficult to start well because the transition of players is a lot more,” said Wellens.
“When you get clubs that have come up from League Two, for example, their transition of players is not so great. At those clubs players are used to winning and their confidence is high. They’re looking to carry that winning mentality through to the next season.
“We’ve got our squad now. Maybe one or two might come in on loan, I don’t know.
“But now we’ve got to focus on what relationships we can get going on the pitch, and what works. That’s a process we’ve got to go through. Once the manager finds it, then at this level we should be winning games more often than we’re losing.”
