Rob Jones says he is indebted to Paul Dickov for giving him another leg up onto the coaching ladder.
Jones will take charge of his first Final Third Development League fixture today when Doncaster welcome Scunthorpe United to Cantley Park (1pm).
And, having replaced Brian Flynn as development team boss, the 34-year-old is relishing his new role and the challenge of bridging the gap between Rovers’ youth team and first team.
“I love the coaching side,” said Jones.
“I’m getting old now so I’ve got to think of something else to do after I’ve finished playing.
“I had a taste of it two years ago, as everybody knows, and it’s what I want to do when I’ve finally had enough of running around.
“It’s good for me.
“I’m indebted to the gaffer. He gave it to me in the first place.
“It’s a good learning curve for me and it’s good to give something back to the kids. That’s the most important thing.”
He added: “Last year was a bit different but this year we’re going to have a positive influence on it - myself, Stan [Paul Stancliffe] and Willo [Paul Wilson], the youth team guys.
“Hopefully we can get these boys ready for first team duties. That’s the main aim.
“These development squads are great when you’re winning and doing well but the bigger picture is to get these boys into the first team and doing well.”
Rovers drew 1-1 with Askern in Jones’ first game in charge last week.
Admission to today’s game is free for season ticket holders and Alliance members. Adults £1, concessions 50p.
