Paul Dickov says he will wait until the time is right to dip into the loan market this season.
Rovers suffered a hammerblow at the weekend when striker Curtis Main was ruled out for up to six weeks after undergoing a cartilage operation following a knock suffered in the defeat to Port Vale.
But Dickov has ruled out seeking reinforcements just yet and has backed his squad to battle on in Main’s absence.
With the club’s playing budget stretched to its limit, a contingency fund has been made available to cover essential loan signings.
But with the season just ten days old, Dickov is reluctant to dip into the coffers at this stage.
And he also insisted it would take the right players to become available for him to make any moves.
“We’re constantly monitoring players all the time,” he told the Star. “If we feel the right player has become available and one that will improve us or boost us by providing cover, then we’ll have a look at them.
“There’s still another couple of weeks before the window closes and then it opens up again.
“If we feel it’s the right time to do it, we’ll do it.
“We won’t just do it for the sake of doing it or as a panicky move.”
Dickov has reiterated his belief in bringing young players into the squad in order to cover absences.
He said: “We knew if we had one or two injuries or suspensions we would be light.
“But that’s where the philosophy we’re trying to bring into the club for the future comes in and the youngsters will come in.
“If we have to do that and we play them – like we did with Liam Wakefield at York – we’ll do that and give them a chance.
“People talk about them being inexperienced but the only way to give them experience is to play them in games.
“If we have to, we will use the squad to it’s maximum.”
Reece Wabara and Jamie McCombe have both been rated as 50-50 for tonight’s game against Preston North End at the Keepmoat.
McCombe trained yesterday after missing Saturday’s game.
Rovers will today discover whether the appeal against Harry Forrester’s red card against Port Vale has been successful.
Youth team defender Paul McKay has signed his first professional contract with the club.
