BOSSES at Doncaster Racecourse have been praised for embracing this year’s Poppy Appeal.

Racecourses across the country threw their support behind The Royal British Legion’s fundraising campaign by displaying poppies on the front of their racecards at the weekend.

Doncaster joined Kempton, Warwick, Nottingham, Musselburgh, Wolverhampton, Lingfield, Fontwell, Hexham, Wincanton and Market Rasen in raising awareness of the appeal.

Charles Byrne, director of fundraising for the Royal British Legion, said: “We’re extremely grateful to racecourses across the country for their support during the 2012 Poppy Appeal.

“This year we need to raise £42 million to enable us to carry out our vital work for the Armed Forces and their families.

“This wonderful support from Weatherbys, a major publisher in its own right, in the final week of the Poppy Appeal is a very important step to raising nationwide awareness and funds too.”

Nick Craven, commercial director of Weatherbys which produced the racecards on behalf of the courses, said: “The work of The Royal British Legion has never been more important as recent conflicts bring home the needs of our brave Armed Forces and their families.

“We are delighted that so many racecourses decided to display the famous scarlet poppy on the front of their racecards.”
