Doncaster Town CC suffered league and cup defeat despite valiant efforts in their Yorkshire Premier League and T20 encounters.

Alex Gosney’s men first faced reigning Premier League champions York in their domestic fixture where the visitors recorded a 116-run victory.

A day later Town were agonisingly close to taking the T20 honours but saw finalists Sheffield Collegiate clinch glory.

Saturday saw Doncaster welcome York to Town Fields as the away side batted first in what was a formidable innings.

The York batsmen amassed 327 for 7 in their 55 overs with Simon Lambert top-scoring with 116, as Ryan McKendrey made 75, his brother Liam 46 and Nick Kay 34.

Graeme Attenborough was the pick of the bowling for Town with 4 for 78.

Doncaster made a superb attempt to overcome the huge total, but in the end had no answer to some tight spin bowling by the league champions as they were bowled out for 211 in 49.2 overs.

Simon Widdup top-scored with 51. Attenborough added 37 alongside Stuart Guy’s 30, Felix Odell’s 28 and 22 from Ryan Capstick.

McKendrey took 4 for 44, and his brother Liam took five stumpings for York.

The defeat keeps Town fifth in the league and Gosneys men will be hoping to improve on that this weekend when they travel to bottom team Sheffield United on Saturday, and host rivals Barnsley on Sunday (1pm).

Sunday saw Town travel to Scarborough to face Harrogate and Sheffield Collegiate in the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire Premier League T20s Finals Day - a tournament where Doncaster were runners-up last season.

Three teams took part in Town, Harrogate and Sheffield Collegiate.

Facing Harrogate first, the North Yorkshire side opened with the bat - scoring 109 for 7 thanks to ex-Bawtry CC youngster Harry Warren who notched 32.

Ryan Bradshaw also chipped in with 25.

Town rallied in response and overcame the total in 18.1 overs - scoring 110 for 3 thanks to Widdup’s 51 and Odell’s 24.

In the next match, Collegiate cruised past Harrogate to set up a ‘winner takes all’ game between Town and their South Yorkshire rivals.

Batting first, Collegiate posted 154 for 4 thanks to a third wicket stand of 118 in 89 balls between Simon Guy (68) and Daniel Walton (60).

Bowler Curtis Free claimed 2 for 35 for Town.

In reply, Doncaster needed 15 off the last over but fell agonisingly close as they ended on 150 for 7.

Widdup again top-scored with 50 as Rhys Mann hit a solid 35.

Collegiate’s Matt Moroney took a match-winning 5 for 27.

That final win means Sheffield will now represent the league at the Area Finals Day at Elsecarr CC on August 10.
