Doncaster RLFC: Cooke calls for Dons to be more ruthless

Dons boss Paul Cooke is challenging his side to be more ruthless during their Championship run-in.

“We’ve got to stop giving teams a helping hand to get up when we’ve knocked them down,” said Cooke, whose side came from behind to beat North Wales Crusaders on Sunday.

“With five clubs being relegated, there are a lot of desperate sides down there.

“Crusaders may have conceded over 100 points in their previous games, but we knew that there would be some reaction and that we were in for a tough game.

“They were clearly up for the game and produced one of their best performances of the season. But, having said that, we didn’t help ourselves at times.

“We got off to a good start and led 10-0 and we should have been looking to kick on from there. But we then failed to complete three or four sets on the bounce and gave them a leg back up and made it harder for ourselves.

“That is something we spoke about as a group after the game and something that we’ve got to try and eradicate from our remaining games if we are to continue to push for second spot.

“On the plus side, once again we showed that we’ve got some character and desire in the group.

“That firm belief that we can win games from positions that in the past we probably couldn’t have done, has shown through a number of times this season.”

Fourth-placed Dons, who are just two points adrift of second spot, entertain unbeaten leaders Leigh on Sunday.
