Doncaster RLFC: Spiers blow for Dons

Doncaster are likely to be without prop Russ Spiers in Sunday’s Championship game against visiting Whitehaven.

The victim of a late tackle, Spiers was stretchered off with concussion in the club’s 24-8 defeat at Dewsbury at the weekend.

The Dons’ first defeat in five Championship games, allied to Halifax’s win over Rochdale, saw them drop a place to fourth.

The last of Dewsbury’s five tries in the closing stages robbed the Dons of a losing bonus point, but player-coach Paul Cooke was philosophical when reflecting on a fifth straight defeat by the Rams.

“I don’t think that we deserved anything from the game. I think they were the better team and sometimes you’ve just got to draw a line under it and move on,” he said.

“We’ve got to try and fix areas in which we were poor ahead of Sunday’s game against Whitehaven, and there were quite a few of them.

“There is certainly a lot to work on in training this week.

“We’ve had a really tough month with four successive away games and we’ve picked up eight points out of 12 which isn’t too bad.

“But we possibly should have beaten Featherstone last weekend - where we had enough chances - and we bombed a couple on Sunday so maybe could have pinched a bonus point.

“But, as I say, I don’t think our performance warranted it. I don’t think we sustained enough pressure for long enough periods of the game.

“We just didn’t get into the right areas for long enough and that was something we’d spoken about during the week.”
